From Overseas to India... Maka Maka

Women have been proving themselves multi taskers for quite some time now, but when they set up their little business, in some unknown land, or some corner of the globe, that becomes truly inspiring.
And, that's the story of Maka Maka, a newly launched brand in India by entrepreneur Mitun Chakraborty.

While her hometown is Kolkata, Chakraborty is now operating from Vancouver, British Colombia. Now you may like to know what this interesting brand name, Maka Maka is into. Well, think some nice linen or natural fabrics in home textiles, you might give a thought to this brand.

What's the USP of this brand? You will get to see the sophisticated style of Kolkata, and a beautiful and modern amalgamation international trends in terms of colours.  While she is an MBA, but her first foray into luxury home textiles was Mélange Creations Luxury Linens, Inc. using artisanal and natural fabrics to create a brand of unique home textile products. While overseas, the brand has a different name, called Rajboori, which  was an obvious evolution from the earlier projects Mitun has pursued, in India it is Maka Maka.  When we spoke to her to know more about this story she revealed the reason for this change. " I wanted to have a new brand for Indian market, as overseas this other name is doing well. Also, Rajboori is more about Ahimnsa silk, and in Maka Maka, you will get to see experimenting done especially on linens, cottons, etc."

She also shared a few trends that you can easily follow for your home decor. " It is always good to have throw away cushions in your living room, as they quickly give a style to your decor. Also, have a few runners either on your couch, or may be on your bed, perhaps in wool as it's winter season now. Such add ons are easy on pocket, and make your home feel more cozy," says Chakraborty.

Now, coming to her international collection, which were launched in North America at the New York International Gift Fair in Jan 2009 and in Europe at Maison & Objet in Sep 2009, the brand is really doing well. Having travelled extensively within the US, Canada, India, and Europe, Mitun's home textile collections and choice of fabrics represent a truly international mix of style. She travels to India frequently to personally source the fabrics and work with the artisans directly.

This level of personal attention has allowed RAJBOORI to offer a rare silk such as Peace Silk which is eco-friendly and create a bed linen collection that is the ultimate in home fashion and comfort.

Mitun has also been a featured interior design expert on one of Vancouver's most popular television stations, Channel M.This is her first owned store cum brand, and she chose to establish this venture at her hometown, Calcutta. But, the brand has bigger plans too. By end of 2012, the company plans to change the brand name from Rajboori to Maka Maka as a single brand identity.

Now that's called amalgamation of not just identity, but of creativity too!
